'Spotlight On' is the platform where you can get to know some of the members of our team. Each edition looks at the biggest value-add each role brings to clients, what's the best thing about working for ABN AMRO and answers to a number of personal questions. This week the focus is on Ben Pittam, Business Development Manager of ABN AMRO Commercial Finance.

When did you join ABN AMRO Asset Based Finance?

I joined ABN AMRO Commercial Finance in 2011 as part of the Client Audit team and moved to the Sales team in 2015. Prior to this I worked for Price Pearson, an accountancy firm.

Describe your role at ABN AMRO Asset Based Finance…

I work with the advisory community to provide suitable funding structures to assist with working capital headroom or client acquisition strategies. I liaise with the commercial and risk departments of the business throughout the process to ensure timescales are met and that the structure fits within our risk profile.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I really enjoy truly getting to know a business and its people - whether it be a prospective or existing client. Winning a mandate to provide a funding solution that will help to support a client’s growth is always something that I love being a part of.

What’s the biggest value-add your role brings to clients?

Establishing genuine, solid partnerships and providing flexible funding solutions that make a difference to businesses.

What does a normal day of remote work look like for you?

I like to get up early and go for a run before I switch on my laptop. My work is very client orientated so I’m often on the phone or in virtual contact with clients until lunch – I try and go for a walk whenever I can. After lunch it’s back to work which can involve preparing funding submissions, reviewing proposals or regular catch ups with the advisory community. Working remotely means I‘ve been able to balance work and make space for a quick after school catch up with my kids which has been great.

How are you staying connected with your clients during these challenging times?

Being available to clients is really important to me. I’m a really social person and enjoy working in a role with lots of client contact, and one where I’ve been able to establish long lasting connections. I love being out and meeting clients face to face. That said I haven’t found that my client contact has diminished – I seem to be busier than ever! Now, even more so than ever, making the time to connect with clients is key.

Do you have any tips to find a good work-life balance while working remotely?

Managing the day to suit your personal circumstances is important and so taking an hour out of each day for yourself, when you need it, is not going to bring the world to an end. Something as simple  as going to another room in the house or going for a walk  whilst catching up with colleagues on the phone can really help to boost energy levels.

What was your dream job as a child?

I used to want to join the marines or be a professional footballer but, following a year, out I realized football wasn’t going to be a career for me so I turned my attention to numbers and accountancy. During this time I found that working with people and supporting clients is really where my strengths lie.

What makes your heart beat faster?

The thrill of playing rugby and flying as well as the satisfaction of doing a job where I can make a difference to my client’s business growth.
